hopper, an American love story – an appointment with art at the cinema

The art season at the cinema ends with HOPPER. AN AMERICAN LOVE STORY, dedicated to one of the symbols of American art. Hopper’s America is popular, silent and mysterious, capable of influencing painters like Rothko and Banksy, filmmakers like Alfred Hitchcock and David Lynch, but also photographers and musicians. But who really was this thoughtful artist and master storyteller called Edward Hopper? And how did a struggling illustrator born in upstate New York create so many masterpieces that speak to everyday people as well as experts? The documentary directed by Phil Grabsky analyzes in depth the art of Hopper (1882-1967), his life and his personal relationships, from his beginnings to his relationship with his wife Jo, who abandoned her promising artistic career to be his manager. And again the success of his canvases, the enigmatic personality behind the brush, the ability to investigate solitude like no one before him had managed to do, enough to dialogue, decades later, even with those who, in the Covid period, have found secluded, alone, isolated.
