l’ultima spedizione – cineventi 2025
Polish mountaineer Wanda Rutkiewicz changed the history of the discipline. A before and after of his great ascents. In particular, the expedition planned to reach the top of Kanchenjunga, the third highest mountain on earth. And it was on that occasion that Rutkiewicz disappeared on May 13, 1992. Her body was found in 1995 by a group of Italian mountaineers on the opposite side to the one she had climbed. In the feature film, the director searches for evidence that Rutkiewicz planned his disappearance and is hiding in a Tibetan monastery. In particular, the narrative follows his tracks from Nepal to Tibet, through the highest peaks up to Kanchenjunga, to find out what really happened. Wanda Rutkiewicz was the first European woman to climb Everest. She was also the first climber on K2. An athlete who lived in a world where women were not taken seriously. To further complicate matters, Rutkiewicz lived in the communist era, when Polish citizens did not have passports and traveling abroad was nearly impossible. Despite the obstacles, in 1991 Wanda made her solo ascent of Annapurna. Her achievement is questioned by her male colleagues at base camp and the Polish mountaineer is accused of fraud. Although she is later cleared of this charge, she fails to convince either sponsors or colleagues in her country to join her next expedition.
