Il maestro che promise il mare – Special weekend at the cinema
Special appointment at the cinema with the film “The Master Who Promised the Sea”:
The film tells two stories set in different eras. In 1934, Antoni Benaiges, a Catalan teacher, moves to a small village near Burgos, a Castilian city in northern Spain. He is assigned an elementary class in a small traditionalist school. Benaiges decides to revolutionize the teaching method by applying one recently introduced in France by the pedagogist Célestin Freinet. It is a modern method that puts the student’s needs at the centre. His work came to an abrupt end when in 1936, Antoni Benaiges was assassinated during the Spanish Civil War. The second story, which is intertwined with that of Benaiges, is set in the present day and features Ariadna, a young woman who decides to fulfill her grandfather’s wish by searching for the remains of her great-grandfather killed in the war and buried in a mass grave.
