Ancient cemetery of san pietro – special event on the occasion of the reopening

The Municipality of Avigliana and the Association Amici di Avigliana OdV will inaugurate the wooden sculpture by the artist Luca Germena on Sunday 2 April at 3.00 pm in the Ancient Cemetery of San Pietro, created starting from an ancient cypress tree that has now new life, transformed into sculpture of great meaning and “hope”.

The Ancient Cemetery is entrusted by the Municipality to the Association and has undergone important restorations including, lastly, the restoration by the Municipality of the unsafe access wall to the Church, thanks also to a regional contribution and the interest of the councilor Paolo Ruzzola . It is the Municipality’s intention to enroll the Cemetery in the ASCE (Association of Historical-Monumental Cemeteries in Europe), which brings together and connects European historical cemeteries.

Il Filo della Memoria of the Il Colibrì Aps Association of Buttigliera Alta will stage for the occasion a brief historical re-enactment entitled “Twin steps”, linked to some eminent characters who live in this pleasant cemetery (whose tombstones have been restored with contribution of the Municipality of Avigliana and the Amici di Avigliana Association) who, together with other enterprising figures of the late 1800s and early 1900s from nearby Buttigliera, contributed in various ways to the social and cultural development of our valley.

For the occasion, the Church of San Pietro will be open to the public for guided tours.
